You are invited to join the discussion.

When: May 9, 10 a.m. – noon

Where: Head Hall (the Gillin Hall part of the engineering complex), Room C11 (enter from campus side or from Windsor Street entrance)

What: Panel and full group discussion

Panel:

“All is well with women in science—or is it?” asks Prof. Geoff Rayner-Canhem, professor of chemistry at MUN (Grenfell Campus) who teaches Women in Science and, together with his partner Marlene Rayner-Canham, has published several books about the work of forgotten women scientists.

Geoff is joined by professional engineer Christine Plourde, President of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of NB, who is actively involved in a national effort to increase the proportion of women members in the profession.

Building a bridge (metaphorically) between the academy and the STEM work world is sociologist Dr. Lori Leach, who is an occasional lecturer in UNB’s Gender and Women’s Studies Interdisciplinary Program, researches women in computer science in particular, and promotes women in trades and technology.

The event will be moderated by Prof. Frank Collins of UNB’s Engineering Faculty and Prof. Wendy Robbins of UNB’s Gender and Women’s Studies program.

This two-part event is being cancelled. News of a special fall gathering will shared as details emerge.

Hello everyone,

You are cordially invited to attend the April 24th NB Women in IT/ICT luncheon update event or the May 7th wine and chat event. Pick one and join us.

Last month we heard from Larry Sampson about the state of the ICT industry in NB and the ICT talent gap challenges we have that is affecting our potential to excel.

In 2012 our group undertook a strategy planning session. From that a number of important sector initiatives were identified and deemed relevant to improving the sector and the involvement and advancement of women in ICT.

In short, there are a lot of opportunities to chase. From peer mentoring that helps advance women into senior leadership roles to getting the attention of young girls onto the fun of building robots. But, we can’t chase everything.

Our informal group, of which you are a part,  represents a great resource to the advancement of the sector. NBWICT would like to better focus that collective resource on a specific endavour for the coming year. We would like you to join us this month for lunch or wine conversation to determine that focus. We want everyone’s input. Where do you think we should be focusing our attention? What would interest you?
