From STEM to STEAM October 5, 2013

We need to add Art + Design to the equation — to transform STEM into STEAM.  STEM + Art = STEAM

We often hear the acronym STEM when talking about technology but equally important to Science, Engineering and Math is ART. We inherently know how innovation remains tightly coupled with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – the STEM subjects but, it is Art + Design that will allow us to deliver desirable technology (instead of simply functional technology), increase its adoption and transform our economy in the 21st century just as science and technology did in the last century.

The objectives of the STEAM movement are simple:

  • transform research policy to place Art + Design at the center of STEM
  • encourage integration of Art + Design in K–20 education
  • influence employers to hire artists and designers to drive innovation

Watch for the movement to gain traction in our educational curriculum and encourage our youth toward education in STEM subjects as well as the Arts.
