Call for judges for the River Valley Regional Science Fair, April 19th March 28, 2012

Posted by Jane Fritz in April 2012, General Notices.

Last year New Brunswick’s Farouk Selouani, a Grand Prize winner at his regional science fair, moved on to win a national Gold Medal-Intermediate Level (Grades 9 and 10) at the Canada-Wide Science Fair for creating software that could help doctors determine if a breast biopsy is malignant (cancerous) or benign. Taking data from a breast biopsy, a doctor can enter nine parameters into his online software. Using statistical models, the software determines the likelihood that the biopsy is either benign or malignant. From solving problems, improvement of products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas, the student research developed through the New Brunswick Regional Science Fairs program touches upon our most strategic industries and areas of research. The use and application of technology is intrinsic to the applied science projects found in the annual New Brunswick Regional Science Fairs. Held in three locations annually, the regional science fairs bring together the participants and projects selected to advance from the school districts 2, 6, 8, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, & 18.

Each year for the last 8 years, Science East Science Centre has managed the three regional science fairs in New Brunswick. Currently they are recruiting judges for the River Valley Regional Science Fair (RVRSF) being held at UNB in Fredericton, April 19, 2012. This is a great opportunity to interact with and meet New Brunswick’s most engaged students in STEM. Professionals are required from all areas of science and technology to judge. You don’t have to be an expert in any particular field to judge as you will be lead through the process by Science East. You do have to be interested in youth and their ideas! It’s amazing what these kids come up with, so it’s a valuable and eye-opening experience for all involved. A few members of NB Women in ICT served as judges last year and really enjoyed the experience. Judging will take place Thursday, April 19, 2012 from 11:00 am -5 pm. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer judge, Science East would like to hear from you as soon as possible. 25-30 judges are required for the River Valley Fair.
